Twenty people meet at the entrance range at twenty to seven, before the main Dawn Chorus admission. The east range is the coldest part of the building at that hour and the glass is running with water, which is worth seeing once.
The walk follows the main loop as far as the boiler house and back. It takes about seventy-five minutes, and it stops wherever there is something to stop for, so it takes longer on a good morning.
What you get from going early is the order things wake up in. The canopy is not one noise. It arrives in layers over about forty minutes, and by the time most visitors come through the doors at half past nine it has flattened out into the sound people think of as the sound of the building.
Wear more than you expect to need. The heating does not come up until seven and the walk starts before that.
